Nemanja Gudelj has left Sevilla after nine seasons with the club, becoming a free agent as his contract expired, Sevilla FC announced on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Serbian midfielder made 261 appearances for the Andalusian side, winning two Europa League titles during his time there. Sevilla described Gudelj as a “Sevillana legend” in a statement released alongside the news of his departure.
Gudelj arrived at Sevilla in 2019 and quickly established himself as a key player, known for his versatility and defensive contributions in midfield. He featured prominently in both of Sevilla’s Europa League successes, in 2020 and 2023, and became a fan favourite at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. His departure leaves a significant void in the Sevilla midfield, particularly given his experience and leadership qualities.
Simultaneously, Sevilla have announced the arrival of Jon Guridi from Alavés. The 31-year-old Spanish midfielder joins Sevilla as a free agent, bringing with him experience from his time at Real Sociedad and Alavés. Guridi’s arrival is seen as a necessary reinforcement for Sevilla’s midfield, particularly given the club’s current financial constraints.
Sevilla are currently undergoing a period of financial instability, with president José Maria del Nido Carrasco acknowledging the challenges posed by the club’s salary cap. He stated that the “situation is under control” but emphasized that the “problem lies in the salary cap.” The appointment of a new sporting director, José Ignacio Navarro, signals the club’s intention to navigate these financial difficulties and rebuild the squad. Guridi’s arrival as a free agent reflects this strategy, allowing Sevilla to strengthen the team without incurring a transfer fee. This move provides a much-needed boost to the squad as they look to stabilize their position in La Liga.
The arrival of Guridi is expected to offset some of the impact of Gudelj’s departure, providing competition and depth in the midfield positions. Sevilla will likely continue to seek further reinforcements in the transfer window, but their options may be limited by their financial situation.
