Newcastle United are focusing their attention on Chelsea forward Liam Delap as a potential summer signing, contrary to widespread reports linking them with Nicolas Jackson, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The Magpies are preparing for a significant transfer window following a disappointing 2025, where they failed to adequately replace Alexander Isak after his move to Liverpool.
Newcastle experienced a setback in last year’s market, losing Isak and struggling to attract key targets who opted for rival clubs. This highlighted a gap in stature compared to the Premier League’s established elite. Delap, who previously turned down a move to St. James’ Park in favour of Chelsea due to a release clause at Ipswich Town, could now be reconsidering his options.
Jacobs revealed to GIVEMESPORT that Delap is open to staying at Chelsea and fighting for his place, but acknowledges Newcastle’s interest. “There will be outgoings and one could be Liam Delap,” Jacobs stated. “My information is that the player would like to stay and fight for his place, and if you're Liam Delap, even with Joao Pedro locking down that lead number 9 role, you're maybe waiting to see who the new manager is, but there is interest in Liam Delap, particularly, I'm told, from Newcastle United, who will add another striker this summer.”
He clarified that links between Newcastle and Nicolas Jackson are currently inaccurate. Jackson is expected to return to Chelsea as Bayern Munich’s obligation to buy was deemed unattainable. Jacobs believes Newcastle will be “really busy” this summer to address the shortcomings of the previous window, but dismissed suggestions that Nick Woltemade needs to be sold to fund a move for Delap. The club may see departures in other positions to generate funds for a wider squad revamp, with finding a consistent goalscorer being a top priority. Delap’s potential arrival would offer Newcastle a fresh attacking option as they look to regain their competitive edge.
