Newcastle United have initiated discussions regarding a transfer for Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli, according to TEAMtalk. The move comes as the club anticipates the departure of Anthony Gordon, who has agreed to join Barcelona for a reported fee of £69 million (€80 million, $92.5 million).
The 24-year-old Ezzalzouli enjoyed a breakout season in LaLiga, registering 15 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances for Betis. Newcastle’s interest in the Morocco international predates Gordon’s impending move, but has accelerated with the winger’s availability.
Sources indicate that Newcastle have been extensively scouting Ezzalzouli for several months. The player’s camp is reportedly receptive to a move to St James’ Park, attracted by the club’s long-term project and the opportunity to compete in the Premier League. Ezzalzouli initially joined Betis from Barcelona in 2023, having come through the Catalan club’s youth system.
Barcelona retained a high opinion of Ezzalzouli but allowed him to leave in search of consistent first-team football, a decision that has proven beneficial for the player’s development. His pace, dribbling ability, and goal-scoring threat have significantly enhanced his reputation. Ezzalzouli, a right-footed inverted winger, is also expected to feature for Morocco at the upcoming World Cup finals.
Real Betis are anticipating Ezzalzouli’s departure and are prepared to negotiate a fee below his €60 million (£52m, $70m) release clause, although they will be due a 20% cut of any profit due to a prior agreement with Barcelona regarding his €7.5 million transfer in 2023. Other clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester City’s City Football Group, Everton, Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Napoli, have also expressed interest in the 35-times capped international. However, Newcastle’s long-standing interest and the clear opportunity for a prominent role in Eddie Howe’s attack position them strongly in the pursuit. The anticipated sale of Gordon is expected to free up funds and create a vacancy on the left wing, making Ezzalzouli a key target as Newcastle reshape their attacking options.
