Newcastle United have completed the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for a fee that could reach £23 million, approximately €27 million, according to the BBC. The transfer sees the young Dutchman become the 24th most expensive player under the age of 19 in football history, and the most expensive departure from the Dutch league.
Steur, who only turned 18 in January, has quickly established himself as a key player for Ajax, making 26 professional appearances, including three in the Champions League, and contributing with one goal and two assists. He has represented the Netherlands at various youth levels, from under-15 to under-19.
The move to St. James’ Park makes Steur the third signing of the summer for Eddie Howe’s side, following the arrivals of French defender Ewen Jaouen and Ivorian midfielder Bazoumana Touré. The acquisition bolsters Newcastle’s midfield options, which have been impacted by the departure of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham. There is also ongoing speculation, reported by British media, that Bruno Guimarães could be subject to a bid from Arsenal.
Steur progressed through the Ajax academy, having been with the club since the age of seven. He broke into the first team in December and quickly became a regular fixture, demonstrating maturity beyond his years in a demanding midfield role. Newcastle will be hoping he can continue his development in the Premier League and become a long-term asset for the club. This signing signals Newcastle’s continued investment in young talent as they aim to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for top honours.
