Newcastle United are considering a bid for SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi following his impressive performances at the World Cup, according to Sky Sports and the Daily Mail. The 20-year-old has scored three goals and registered one assist in three games for Switzerland, building on a strong 2025/26 season with the Bundesliga club.
Manzambi joined Freiburg ahead of the 2024/25 season and quickly established himself as a key player in Christian Streich’s side. Last season, the Swiss international made 47 appearances across all competitions, contributing seven goals and nine assists. His form helped Freiburg secure a top-half finish in the Bundesliga and qualification for the Europa League.
The potential transfer fee is reported to be in the region of €46-48 million. While Manzambi is currently under contract with Freiburg until 2030, the club does not have a release clause in his contract, meaning Newcastle would need to agree a deal directly with the German side. Negotiations could prove challenging given Manzambi’s importance to Freiburg’s plans.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reportedly keen to strengthen his midfield options ahead of the upcoming season. The Magpies qualified for the Champions League last season but face a more demanding schedule with increased competition on multiple fronts. Manzambi’s energetic style of play and ability to contribute goals and assists would add a valuable dimension to Newcastle’s squad.
Manzambi’s emergence as a target for Newcastle highlights the growing reputation of Freiburg as a club capable of developing young talent. The Breisgau club have a track record of identifying and nurturing promising players, and Manzambi is the latest example of their success. Should he move to St. James’ Park, Manzambi would likely compete with Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton, and Sean Longstaff for a starting position in midfield, adding further depth and quality to the Newcastle squad.
