Newcastle United are again considering a move for 1.FC Köln winger Said El Mala, according to the Daily Mail. The Premier League club previously expressed interest in the German Under-21 international several months ago, but were initially rebuffed by the player’s representatives.
At that time, El Mala’s agents reportedly favored a potential transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion, though a deal with the Seagulls ultimately failed to materialize. Newcastle’s financial situation has since changed with the recent sale of Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona for a reported €80 million, potentially providing the funds to meet Köln’s valuation.
Köln are believed to be seeking a fee of €50 million for El Mala, a figure now considered affordable for Newcastle following the Gordon departure. The 21-year-old has been a developing talent in the Bundesliga, demonstrating pace and dribbling ability on the wing, though he has not yet established himself as a consistent starter for the German club.
El Mala’s potential arrival at St. James’ Park would add to the growing German contingent within Eddie Howe’s squad, joining Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw. Prior to the failed move to Brentford, the winger was also linked with clubs such as Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, though concrete offers have not emerged. Newcastle are also reportedly monitoring Matias Fernandez-Pardo of Lille as an alternative option in the wide position.
Securing El Mala would provide Howe with another attacking option, increasing competition for places in the forward line and adding depth to the squad ahead of next season. The move could also represent a shrewd investment in a young player with significant potential for future development.
