Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea striker Liam Delap this summer, contrary to previous reports linking them with a move for Nicolas Jackson. The information comes from journalist Ben Jacobs, who suggests that Delap could be the striker Newcastle pursue when bolstering their attacking options.
Newcastle experienced a disappointing 2025 transfer window, notably failing to adequately replace Alexander Isak after his departure to Liverpool. The club’s handling of Isak’s transfer, initially claiming he was not for sale before ultimately allowing him to leave, reportedly damaged their reputation in negotiations. Several key targets subsequently chose to join rival clubs, highlighting a perceived gap in stature compared to Premier League elites.
Delap, 23, joined Chelsea last year but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. He was previously a target for Newcastle, but opted for a move to Stamford Bridge due to a release clause in his contract at Ipswich Town. Jacobs reports that Delap is keen to remain at Chelsea and fight for his place, but acknowledges the possibility of a transfer, particularly with Joao Pedro currently holding the starting striker position.
According to Jacobs, Newcastle will be “really busy” this summer to address the shortcomings of their previous transfer activity. While a striker departure from St. James’ Park is possible, he does not believe it necessarily requires Nick Woltemade to leave to facilitate a move for Delap. The club anticipates multiple significant departures, which will generate funds for a wider squad revamp, with a new goalscorer being a key priority.
Jacobs clarifies that links with Nicolas Jackson are currently “wide of the mark”, and that if Newcastle are to raid Chelsea for a forward, Delap is the more likely target at this stage. Bayern Munich’s obligation to buy Jackson appears unlikely to be fulfilled, meaning he will return to Chelsea. This shift in focus towards Delap indicates a change in Newcastle’s attacking plans for the upcoming transfer window.
