Neymar faces misogyny accusations after referee rant in Brazil
Neymar has become embroiled in a fresh controversy in Brazil after launching a scathing attack on a referee, with his comments now being investigated for potential misogyny. The incident occurred following Santos's 2-0 victory over Remo in the Brazilian league on Thursday night, where the 34-year-old provided an assist but was shown a yellow card for his protests.
According to reports from Brazilian media, Neymar directed his ire at referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio after the final whistle. He received the booking for complaining about what he perceived as dangerous tackles from opponents. In comments later published by ge.globo, Neymar stated, "This card is unfair. I suffered a dangerous tackle at the end of the match, unnecessarily. I went to protest and I got a yellow card. Sávio is like that, he woke up like Chico, […] he wants to be the star of the match, he cruelly lacks respect for the players."
It is the use of the word "Chico" that has ignited the wider scandal. In Brazilian Portuguese, the term is linked to "chiqueiro," a word whose original meaning is associated with menstruation and used to describe something as impure or dirty. This has led observers and commentators to accuse the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star of misogynistic language. The controversy adds to a growing sense of detachment between the Brazilian public and their once-revered football icon, who has faced increasing criticism over his form and commitment ahead of the World Cup.
The outburst resulted in an automatic one-match suspension, ruling Neymar out of Santos's upcoming fixture against Flamengo. This disciplinary issue comes at a sensitive time for the player, whose place in the national team setup has been under intense scrutiny. His return to Santos, the club where he began his career, was meant to be a triumphant homecoming but has been punctuated by inconsistent performances and off-pitch distractions.
Santos and the Brazilian football authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the investigation into the player's comments. The incident is likely to prompt a review by the league's disciplinary committee, which could impose further sanctions beyond the automatic suspension. For Neymar, it represents another public relations challenge as he attempts to focus on reclaiming his best form ahead of the global tournament later this year. The fallout may further complicate his relationship with fans and the media in his homeland.
