Juventus winger Nico Gonzalez is nearing a permanent transfer to Atlético Madrid, according to reports in Italy. The deal, expected to be finalized by the end of next month, will see the Argentinian player join the Spanish club on a four-year contract for a fee of just over €27 million.
This figure is slightly below the €32 million release clause stipulated in Gonzalez’s current contract with Juventus. Atlético Madrid’s willingness to negotiate a lower fee is reportedly a key factor in completing the transfer, allowing them to finalize the deal within their budgetary constraints. Gonzalez joined Juventus from Argentinos Juniors in 2022, making 33 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring one goal.
The transfer comes at a crucial time for Juventus, who are set to receive a significant financial boost from the resolution of a long-running legal battle with IMG. Approximately €300 million in funds, resulting from the case initiated in 2019 concerning the sale of broadcasting rights between 2008 and 2018, will be distributed amongst Serie A clubs. Juventus is expected to receive between €20 and €30 million from this settlement, providing a much-needed injection of capital and bolstering their prospects for European qualification.
Further financial support for Juventus may also come from a potential capital increase, with Tether, the club’s second-largest shareholder, signaling their continued commitment. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, posted a cryptic message on social media featuring a heart and a zebra, while board member Francesco Garino stated, “When it’s too much, it’s too much,” suggesting a willingness to invest further in the club. Tether previously made an official offer to purchase Juventus in December. The combined financial influx from the IMG settlement, the Gonzalez transfer, and potential investment from Tether will be vital as Juventus navigate their financial situation and aim to secure a return to the Champions League.
