Christopher Nkunku’s position at Milan appears to have been significantly strengthened by recent developments, particularly the potential departure of Rafael Leao. According to reports in the Italian press, the club had previously been open to selling Nkunku, valuing him at around €40 million, but a change in circumstances has altered their stance.
Nkunku, who arrived at Milan as the club’s most expensive signing in the 2025 transfer window, initially struggled to establish himself under coach Massimiliano Allegri, often finding himself on the bench. However, his form improved towards the end of the season, notably delivering crucial goals, leading to a reassessment of his value within the squad. This shift in perception coincided with a period of upheaval at the club, with changes in the coaching staff, sporting director, and chief executive.
The potential exit of Leao is a key factor in Nkunku’s improved prospects. Leao has publicly indicated his intention to leave Milan, and while a transfer is contingent on a suitable offer, the club now considers his departure a much more likely scenario than his continued stay. Without Leao, Nkunku would become a vital component of Milan’s attack, as both players operate in similar areas of the pitch.
Further complicating matters, and potentially benefitting Nkunku, is the possibility of Ralf Rangnick taking over as Milan’s head coach. Rangnick, known for his development of young players during his time at RB Leipzig, has a connection to Nkunku’s past success. Although Rangnick didn’t directly coach Nkunku at Leipzig, several of his former assistants, including Julian Nagelsmann and Marco Rose, did. Rangnick currently holds a position as head of sport and football development for the Red Bull group, maintaining ties to the club where Nkunku flourished. A move for Rangnick could see Nkunku reunited with a familiar system and philosophy, potentially unlocking his full potential.
Nkunku’s situation has dramatically shifted from being considered surplus to requirements to a potentially key player for Milan, contingent on the movements of other players and the appointment of a new manager.
