Liverpool are considering a move to re-sign Darwin Nunez on a free transfer this summer, though a decision has not yet been made, with up to eight clubs reportedly vying for the Uruguay international.
The 26-year-old is set to become available after agreeing a mutual termination of his contract with Al-Hilal, just a year after joining the Saudi Pro League side for a fee of €53m. Nunez scored nine goals in 24 appearances for Al-Hilal but was removed from their league squad in February following the arrival of Karim Benzema and the limitations on foreign players.
According to sources, Nunez’s representatives have begun discussions with clubs across Europe, including several in the Premier League, with Liverpool among those informed of his availability. Reports in Spain suggest Nunez is open to a return to Anfield.
Nunez initially joined Liverpool from Benfica in June 2022 for a then club-record fee of £85m, scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances. He was sold last year to facilitate signings of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, though both have faced injury issues and have yet to fully justify their price tags.
Several other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation, including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa, attracted by the opportunity to sign a proven Premier League player without a transfer fee. Interest is also emerging from continental Europe, with Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich both expressing interest.
Benfica, where Nunez previously played, are also keen on a reunion, with incoming head coach Marco Silva reportedly a long-time admirer of the player. However, the financial competition from Premier League clubs could prove challenging for the Portuguese side.
Despite a challenging spell in Saudi Arabia, Nunez is believed to be confident in his ability to succeed at the highest level, and his camp anticipates significant interest in his services. His priority is to find a sporting project that suits his ambitions.
