Darwin Nunez is poised for a return to Liverpool after his contract with Al-Hilal was reportedly terminated by mutual consent, according to Uruguayan journalist Juan Pablo Romero via reporter Martin Charquero. The 26-year-old forward initially joined the Saudi Pro League side in August 2025 for a fee of around £46 million, following a spell at Anfield where he scored 40 goals in 143 appearances.
Liverpool originally signed Nunez from Benfica ahead of the 2022/23 campaign for £64 million, with the club hoping to capitalize on his impressive form of 34 goals in 41 appearances for the Portuguese side. However, his time at Liverpool was marked by inconsistency, and his relationship with supporters became strained as he appeared to seek a move away.
Despite scoring nine goals in 24 outings for Al-Hilal, Nunez has fallen out of favour, with Karim Benzema preferred in recent months. This has led to the termination of his contract, making him a free agent and opening the door for a swift return to the Premier League. Liverpool were previously ‘offered’ the chance to re-sign Nunez earlier this month, but were weighing up the opportunity amid competition from eight other clubs.
Ally McCoist recently suggested that Liverpool “missed” Nunez during their 2025/26 season on talkSPORT, highlighting his presence and goal contributions despite criticism. The potential re-signing of Nunez, particularly on a free transfer, could address a shortage of striker options for manager Andoni Iraola following Hugo Ekitike’s serious Achilles injury. This move could provide a familiar face and a proven goalscorer to bolster Liverpool’s attacking options.
