OGC Nice announced on Monday the departure of their sporting director, Florian Maurice. The club, which secured its Ligue 1 status by defeating Saint-Étienne in a relegation/promotion playoff at the end of May, stated the decision was reached by mutual agreement.
Maurice arrived at Nice two years ago, having previously held the same position at Stade Rennais. His departure follows a disappointing season for the club, marred by a violent confrontation with supporters in November after a heavy defeat to Lorient. The incident highlighted the growing discontent surrounding the team’s performance.
The club released a statement through vice-president Maurice Cohen, praising Maurice for his “human qualities and professionalism.” Cohen acknowledged a “sometimes difficult context” but emphasized Maurice’s continued commitment to the team’s objectives. The club thanked him for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors.
As of yet, a successor to Maurice has not been named. Initial reports suggested Grégory Lorenzi, formerly of Stade Brestois, was a leading candidate, but he has since joined Olympique de Marseille. Multiple sources now indicate that Geoffrey Moncada, who spent eight years with AC Milan, is a strong contender for the role. Moncada’s experience in European football could prove valuable as Nice looks to rebuild its sporting structure.
The move also raises questions about the future of manager Claude Puel, who faced increasing scrutiny throughout the challenging season. The club will likely evaluate Puel’s position alongside the search for a new sporting director. This restructuring signals a significant shift for Nice as they aim to stabilize and improve their performance in Ligue 1. The appointment of a new sporting director will be crucial in shaping the club’s transfer strategy and long-term vision.
