Oliver Baumann addresses Bayern Munich speculation after Bild report
TSG Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann has responded to recent speculation linking him with a potential move to Bayern Munich. The Germany international, whose contract with Hoffenheim runs until 2028, expressed surprise when questioned about the rumors following his side's 2-1 defeat to Mainz on Saturday.
Last month, German publication Bild reported that Bayern are considering Baumann as a potential replacement for the legendary Manuel Neuer, should the 40-year-old decide to retire this summer. According to that report, the Bundesliga champions' plan would involve signing the 34-year-old Baumann as an experienced deputy to Jonas Urbig, a 21-year-old prospect currently at SC Freiburg who is reportedly lined up to eventually succeed Neuer as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.
When asked by Bild about the links, Baumann said, "Oh wow, I haven’t thought about that at all. I’ll do that at some point – or maybe not." His comments suggest the speculation has not been a primary focus, with his attention currently on Hoffenheim's final matches of the season. Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer also distanced himself from the rumors, stating, "No idea. You (Bild) reveal a lot, the agents do their part. It all goes past me. We are focused on the last games."
Oliver Baumann has been a consistent and reliable presence for Hoffenheim since joining from SC Freiburg in 2014, making over 350 appearances for the club. His steady performances have occasionally earned him call-ups to the German national team, where he serves as a backup to Neuer and Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen. This long-term stability makes him a logical, if somewhat unexpected, target for Bayern, who value experienced German goalkeepers within their squad structure.
The potential move hinges entirely on the future of Manuel Neuer. The Bayern captain has shown no definitive signs of retiring, having recently returned to form after a long injury layoff. However, Bayern's sporting directors, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, are known to be planning for all long-term scenarios. Bringing in a seasoned professional like Baumann on a free or low-cost transfer would provide crucial mentorship for a younger goalkeeper like Urbig, while ensuring the squad retains depth and experience.
For Hoffenheim, losing their captain and undisputed number one would be a significant blow, despite the security of his long-term contract. The club has no immediate need to sell, which could complicate any approach from Bavaria. As the season concludes, all parties will be awaiting clarity on Neuer's plans, which will dictate whether Bayern formalize any interest in Oliver Baumann or look elsewhere to address their goalkeeping future.
