Oliver Baumann responds to Bayern Munich transfer speculation
Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann has addressed recent reports linking him with a summer move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. The speculation, originating from German publication Bild last month, suggested Bayern view the 34-year-old as a potential experienced deputy should long-time number one Manuel Neuer retire at the end of the season.
According to the initial report, Bayern's plan would involve promoting young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to the starting role, with Baumann brought in to provide seasoned cover. When asked about the links by Bild following Hoffenheim's 2-1 defeat to Mainz on Saturday, Baumann appeared taken aback. "Oh wow, I haven’t thought about that at all. I’ll do that at some point – or maybe not," the goalkeeper said.
Hoffenheim head coach Christian Ilzer also faced questions on the matter and distanced himself from the rumours. "No idea. You (Bild) reveal a lot, the agents do their part. It all goes past me. We are focused on the last games," Ilzer stated. Any potential move would be complicated by Baumann's contractual situation at Hoffenheim, where his current deal is set to run until the summer of 2028.
Baumann has been a consistent and reliable presence for Hoffenheim since joining from Freiburg in 2014, making over 350 appearances for the club. His steady performances have also earned him two caps for the German national team, keeping him in the broader conversation for elite domestic roles. The veteran's experience and proven track record in the Bundesliga logically make him a candidate for clubs seeking stability in goal.
For Bayern Munich, the goalkeeping situation remains a primary focus for the upcoming transfer window. The future of club legend Manuel Neuer, who turns 38 this month, is yet to be officially clarified beyond this season. The club has already secured the signing of Urbig from FC Augsburg, a 20-year-old highly regarded prospect seen as a long-term project.
The potential acquisition of Baumann would represent a clear short-to-medium-term strategy, adding a safe, homegrown pair of hands to mentor Urbig and ensure competitiveness. For Hoffenheim, losing their captain and most capped player would be a significant blow, both in terms of leadership and on-field quality, likely necessitating a major search for a replacement. As the season concludes, Bayern's decision on Neuer's future will dictate the urgency and direction of their search, with Baumann's name now publicly in the frame.
