Oliver Kahn warns Bayern Munich of 'intimidating' Bernabéu atmosphere ahead of Real Madrid clash
Bayern Munich legend Oliver Kahn has warned his former club of the uniquely daunting challenge that awaits them at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu stadium ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg. The former Germany goalkeeper, speaking to Süddeutsche Zeitung, emphasised the psychological and physical toll of playing in the Spanish capital, citing the intense atmosphere and recent stadium renovations as key factors.
“Ninety minutes at the Bernabéu are as exhausting as nowhere else,” Kahn said. “The crowd in Madrid is far more intense than in Barcelona; it feels like everything is pressing down on you. The atmosphere can be intimidating. And now, with the roof, it’s even stronger.” The stadium's new retractable roof, completed last year, is designed to contain and amplify crowd noise, potentially heightening the home advantage for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
Kahn also suggested that Real Madrid's turbulent season could paradoxically make them more dangerous opponents in this tie. He pointed to a period of criticism, unrest, and a mid-season coaching change following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti and the brief tenure of Rafael Benítez, before Zinedine Zidane's return. Their dramatic victory over Manchester City in the previous round has, according to Kahn, given the team a renewed sense of purpose. “Real come from a period where they had to overcome many obstacles... And then, suddenly, success against Manchester City, and they feel: Now we can turn the season around. That is exactly what makes Real so dangerous,” he argued.
The historical record heavily favours Real Madrid in this fixture, particularly on home soil. Bayern's last victory at the Bernabéu was a 1-0 win in the first leg of the 2001 Champions League semi-final, a tie they ultimately lost. In subsequent visits, including a painful 4-0 defeat in the 2014 semi-finals and a 2-1 loss in the 2018 semi-finals, Bayern have found it difficult to secure a positive result. This historical weight adds another layer to Kahn's warning for Thomas Tuchel's current squad.
For Bayern Munich, the warning from a figure of Kahn's stature, who played in numerous high-stakes clashes at the venue, carries significant weight. It underscores the mental preparation required alongside the tactical plan to navigate one of European football's most hostile environments. The tie represents a crucial juncture in Bayern's season, as they seek to salvage a challenging domestic campaign with a deep run in Europe's premier club competition. Kahn's comments highlight that the battle at the Bernabéu is as much a psychological test as a footballing one.
