André Onana has rejoined Trabzonspor on loan for a second consecutive season, Manchester United confirmed on Friday. The 30-year-old Cameroon international will again play for the Turkish Super Lig side, with the club announcing the deal with a video styled after the film Black Panther. This move comes after a period of declining form and increased criticism for Onana at Old Trafford.
Onana initially joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023 from Inter Milan, arriving as a high-profile replacement for David de Gea. His first season with the club was described as challenging, and his performances further diminished during the 2024-2025 campaign. He made 33 appearances for Trabzonspor during his previous loan spell, helping the team secure the Turkish Cup – his first trophy since winning the FA Cup with Manchester United in 2024.
The goalkeeper has earned 53 caps for the Cameroon national team and was a key player for Inter Milan before his move to England. At Inter, Onana showcased his ability as a modern goalkeeper, comfortable with the ball at his feet and contributing to build-up play. However, he struggled to consistently replicate that form with United, facing scrutiny for errors and a perceived lack of command in the penalty area.
Trabzonspor will be hoping Onana can rediscover his best form during his loan spell, providing stability and experience to their squad. The loan deal does not include an option for Trabzonspor to make the transfer permanent, meaning Onana is expected to return to Manchester United at the end of the season. This temporary move allows Onana to gain regular playing time and potentially rebuild his confidence, while United can reassess his future upon his return.
