Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana will be sidelined for approximately nine months after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during a recent match against the United States. The operation, deemed successful, was performed by Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet at the Jean-Mermoz private hospital in Lyon.
This injury represents a significant setback for both Onana and Aston Villa, with the Belgian international establishing himself as a regular starter for the Premier League club. He joined Villa last year and quickly became a key component in midfield, providing both defensive cover and driving runs from deep.
In anticipation of Onana’s lengthy absence, Aston Villa have already moved to strengthen their midfield options during the current transfer window. The club has secured the signings of João Gomes and Johan Manzambi, two midfielders with differing profiles, to provide cover and competition in the center of the pitch. This proactive approach highlights the club’s ambition to maintain a strong squad depth despite the injury to a key player.
The loss of Onana adds to midfield concerns for Villa, having already seen Youri Tielemans depart for Manchester United earlier in July for a reported fee of €40 million. Tielemans’ departure created a void in midfield, and Onana’s injury further exacerbates the situation, making the quick additions of Gomes and Manzambi all the more important. The club will likely continue to monitor the transfer market for potential further reinforcements.
Onana’s recovery will be a priority, but his absence will undoubtedly be felt by Aston Villa as they navigate a demanding Premier League season and potentially European commitments. The signings of Gomes and Manzambi are intended to mitigate the impact of his injury and ensure Villa remain competitive.
