Pablo Barrios ruled out of Champions League semi-final against Arsenal
Atletico Madrid have confirmed midfielder Pablo Barrios will miss both legs of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal due to a hamstring injury. The club issued a medical report stating the 23-year-old suffered a muscle injury in his left thigh during Saturday's 3-2 La Liga win over Athletic Club, which will require physiotherapy and rehabilitation. According to reports from Marca, the Spain international is expected to be sidelined for approximately one month.
This development deals a significant blow to manager Diego Simeone's plans for the crucial European tie. Barrios had only just returned to the starting lineup against Athletic after recovering from a previous hamstring issue, but he was forced off after 60 minutes. His absence removes a dynamic and technically gifted presence from Atletico's engine room ahead of the first leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on 30 April and the return at the Emirates Stadium on 7 May.
Barrios has grown into a pivotal figure for Atletico this season, with his energy, ball progression, and defensive work making him a key component of Simeone's system. His injury likely forces a reshuffle in midfield, with the experienced pairing of captain Koke Resurreccion and Marcos Llorente now expected to start against Arsenal. Summer signing Johnny Cardoso provides another option for Simeone, but the Brazilian lacks Barrios's established understanding within the team's structure.
The timing is particularly cruel for Atletico, who are aiming to reach their first Champions League final since 2016. Barrios's injury follows a pattern of fitness setbacks for the squad this season, which Simeone has previously lamented. While the club did not specify a return date, the reported one-month timeline suggests Barrios could be available for the final in Munich on 31 May, should Atletico overcome Arsenal.
This setback alters the complexion of the semi-final, with Arsenal, currently leading the Premier League, now holding a perceived advantage in midfield. Atletico's task of containing the Gunners' creative forces, already formidable, becomes more challenging without one of their most consistent performers. The Spanish side will now rely even more heavily on their famed defensive resilience and tactical discipline to navigate the tie.
