Italy international Marco Palestra has turned down a potential move to Newcastle United, according to TEAMtalk. The 21-year-old defender has informed the Premier League club that he does not wish to join them this summer, with Inter Milan now in a strong position to secure his signature.
Newcastle had identified Palestra as a target to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season, with Eddie Howe’s side already reshaping that area of the squad following departures and uncertainty over existing players. The Magpies’ recruitment staff were particularly attracted to the Italian’s versatility, as he is capable of playing at both right-back and left-back.
However, Palestra’s preference is a return to Italy, and Inter Milan have made significant progress in negotiations. The Nerazzurri view him as a potential replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who has recently departed the club. Inter have reportedly agreed personal terms with Palestra on a five-year contract and are now working to finalize a deal with Atalanta.
Palestra is familiar with Inter, having spent time in their academy earlier in his career. He has since developed into a promising young defender at Atalanta, and a successful loan spell at Cagliari last season showcased his attacking ability, athleticism, and tactical awareness. His performances have also earned him international recognition with Italy.
While personal terms are in place, Inter are yet to agree a fee with Atalanta, who are seeking around €40million (£34.5m, $47.5m) for the player. This has opened the door for other clubs to express interest, including Manchester City and Barcelona, though City, under incoming manager Enzo Maresca, are considered the biggest threat to Inter’s pursuit. Arsenal and Chelsea have also enquired about Palestra’s availability. A successful move to Inter would provide the Milan club with a long-term solution at full-back and further strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
