Joao Palhinha may decline the opportunity to make his loan move to Tottenham Hotspur permanent, reportedly preferring a return to former club Sporting CP for personal reasons. The Portugal international is currently on loan from Bayern Munich, with Spurs holding a £25 million option to buy.
Despite an initially inconsistent season for Palhinha in North London, manager Roberto De Zerbi is known to be a strong admirer of the midfielder and had hoped to retain his services. Palhinha’s form has improved significantly in recent weeks, notably delivering an outstanding performance in Tottenham’s crucial victory over Aston Villa, which lifted them out of the relegation zone.
Bayern Munich are committed to selling Palhinha this summer regardless of his final destination, opening the door for multiple potential suitors. The 30-year-old initially impressed at Tottenham following his arrival, but experienced a dip in form during Igor Tudor’s brief tenure as interim manager.
According to a report from Football Insider, Palhinha’s preference for a return to Portugal stems from personal factors. Tottenham may attempt to negotiate a lower fee than the agreed £25 million option, given Palhinha’s contract with Bayern does not expire until 2028, potentially sparking a bidding war with Sporting and other interested clubs. Ultimately, the decision rests with the player, which could prove disappointing for both De Zerbi and the club.
Palhinha is expected to feature in Tottenham’s upcoming match against Chelsea on May 19th, a fixture that could prove pivotal in their fight for Premier League survival.
