João Palhinha has turned down a substantial offer from an unnamed Saudi Pro League club, according to reports in Portugal. The 31-year-old midfielder prioritizes remaining in Europe and playing competitive football, despite being deemed surplus to requirements at Bayern Munich.
Palhinha spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, making 35 appearances across all competitions and establishing himself as a key figure in midfield. However, with Vincent Kompany now managing Bayern, the Portuguese international is not expected to feature prominently in the German side’s plans for the upcoming campaign. This situation has opened the door to potential moves elsewhere.
Benfica, Palhinha’s former club, has expressed interest in re-signing the player, with ‘Maisfutebol’ reporting that Palhinha is receptive to a return to the Portuguese Primera Liga. However, negotiations have stalled due to a valuation gap, as Benfica have yet to meet Bayern Munich’s €25million asking price. The German champions may need to lower their demands to facilitate the transfer.
Palhinha initially joined Bayern Munich from Sporting CP in 2023, but quickly found himself loaned out to Tottenham. He has 49 caps for the Portuguese national team, and was a part of their squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His combative style and defensive capabilities have made him a sought-after midfielder in recent seasons.
For now, Bayern Munich have confirmed that Palhinha will return to training with the first team, where he remains under contract until June 2028. Should Benfica fail to meet Bayern’s valuation, other European clubs may emerge as potential suitors for the experienced midfielder. A move back to Portugal would allow Palhinha to be closer to his family, a key factor in his decision-making process.
