Benjamin Pavard will return to Inter Milan at the end of his loan spell with Olympique de Marseille, the player announced via Instagram. The France international’s temporary move to the Ligue 1 side is ending without a permanent deal being triggered.
Pavard joined Marseille on loan in August with an option to buy reportedly set at €15 million. Despite featuring in all but four Ligue 1 matches for the club, his time at the Stade Vélodrome has come to an end following Marseille’s Champions League group stage exit in January. He played a key role in the league, becoming a regular starter under multiple managerial changes.
In a social media post, Pavard described his time at Marseille as “a strong experience” and stated he always tried to give his all on the pitch, representing the club with respect and commitment. The 2018 World Cup winner’s departure comes as Marseille prepare for further changes, with the appointment of former Brest sporting director Grégory Lorenzi expected imminently.
Pavard previously played for Bayern Munich before joining Inter Milan. His move to Marseille was seen as an opportunity to secure regular first-team football, but the club’s inconsistent form and Champions League disappointment appear to have influenced the decision not to pursue a permanent transfer. Inter Milan will now assess Pavard’s future upon his return to Italy, with his versatility making him a valuable squad member.
The end of Pavard’s loan signifies another potential shift in personnel for Marseille, as the club looks to rebuild under new leadership. His departure leaves a void in the defense that the club will need to address in the upcoming transfer window.
