Inter Milan are reconsidering the future of defender Benjamin Pavard, according to reports from Italy. Initially placed on the list of players the club were willing to move on, the Frenchman’s situation has become more complex due to a slow transfer market and the departures of experienced defenders Francesco Acerbi and Stefan De Vrij.
Inter are seeking to replace Acerbi and De Vrij, whose contracts expired, with a blend of experienced and young players. The club has found it difficult to identify suitable targets who meet their criteria in terms of age and cost, with previous target Trevoh Chalobah proving unattainable. While Manchester City’s John Stones remains a potential option, negotiations are ongoing. This difficulty in securing reinforcements has led to a reevaluation of Pavard’s role within the squad.
Pavard returned to Inter after a loan spell with Marseille last season but was informed he was not part of the club’s long-term plans. However, the player himself has expressed a desire to remain at the club, reportedly telling fans, “If they want me…”. Inter’s coach, Cristian Chivu, acknowledged the situation, stating Pavard is a current player and that a decision will be made after observing him in training.
There appears to be a shift in Pavard’s attitude, with reports suggesting a more determined and focused approach during the recent training sessions. The club is unwilling to sanction another loan deal for the 28-year-old, meaning any departure would have to be a permanent transfer. So far, there have been no offers that meet Inter’s valuation or the player’s wage demands of €5 million per season. The combination of a stalled market, the difficulty in finding replacements, and Pavard’s renewed commitment could lead to him remaining at Inter for another season.
Inter will be hoping Pavard can put past issues behind him and rediscover the form that saw him become a key player for the club. A positive attitude and strong performances in training could see Pavard earn a place in Chivu’s plans, providing much-needed depth and experience in the Inter defense.
