Bayern's Pavlovic cites Rodri and Busquets as midfield inspirations
Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has revealed that Manchester City's Rodri and Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets are the players who have most inspired his development in the defensive midfield role. The 21-year-old, who has broken into the Bavarian giants' first team this season, made the comments in an interview with the club's official magazine.
Pavlovic highlighted Rodri's recent influence, describing the Spaniard as a world-class operator who has defined the position at Manchester City. "Rodri is a world-class defensive midfielder, even if he has unfortunately had some bad luck with injuries recently," Pavlovic said. He also noted Rodri's Ballon d'Or recognition, a rare honour for a player in his position.
For a longer-term model, Pavlovic pointed to the career of Sergio Busquets. The Bayern academy graduate described the former Barcelona star as a "real role model" from his childhood, praising his all-round game. "Busquets was very strong both with and without the ball, was always available and always had one eye on his surroundings," Pavlovic explained. He emphasised Busquets's defensive solidity and work rate, calling him a "real figurehead" for the role.
The admission provides insight into the stylistic aspirations of one of Germany's most promising young midfield talents. Pavlovic's emergence has been a bright spot for Bayern in a turbulent season, with the homegrown player making 24 appearances across all competitions and earning a first call-up to the German national team in March. His rapid rise has helped to offset the long-term absence of fellow midfielder Joshua Kimmich due to injury.
Pavlovic's development under manager Thomas Tuchel has been notable, with his composure and passing range drawing early comparisons to the very players he now cites. His progression also comes at a time when Bayern are reportedly assessing their long-term options in the holding midfield area, with several established names linked to the club. Pavlovic's performances have arguably made him a central part of those plans moving forward.
By naming two of the most successful and technically proficient defensive midfielders of the modern era, Pavlovic has set a clear benchmark for his own career. His integration into the Bayern setup offers the club a cost-effective and familiar solution in a key area, potentially influencing their strategy in the upcoming transfer window. For now, the focus for the young German will be on finishing the Bundesliga season strongly and continuing to learn from the examples he has chosen to follow.
