Phillip Tietz has revealed his winter transfer to 1. FSV Mainz 05 was a "gut decision" based on a firm belief the club would avoid relegation, a faith that has now been rewarded. The striker played a key role in Mainz's 2-1 victory over St. Pauli, a result that mathematically guaranteed the club's Bundesliga status for another season. Speaking after the match, Tietz shared his relief and reflected on the pivotal choice to join the club in January.
According to the player's post-match comments, the closing stages of the crucial fixture were tense. "In the end, you could see that St. Pauli were really pushing. Sitting on the bench, I was definitely feeling the tension together with my teammates," Tietz said. He also credited his teammates for their support during the match, noting that the opposition defenders made life difficult but that he was put in good positions by those around him.
The 26-year-old forward's move to Mainz was a permanent transfer, though the specific fee involved was not disclosed by either club at the time. He arrived from Bundesliga 2 side SV Darmstadt 98, where he had established himself as a reliable goal threat, scoring 18 goals across the previous season and a half. His physical presence and hold-up play were seen as attributes that could aid Mainz's battle against the drop under then-new coach Urs Fischer.
Tietz's instinct about Mainz's prospects has proven correct. "At the time, I had a clear feeling that Mainz wouldn't be relegated. Today we’re celebrating staying up - it’s a really great team and a great coach with Urs Fischer," he stated. The victory and subsequent survival mark a significant turnaround for a club that spent much of the season in the relegation zone, with Fischer's appointment in November and the January recruitment, including Tietz, being critical factors.
With safety now assured, Mainz can approach their final two Bundesliga fixtures with reduced pressure, allowing Fischer to potentially experiment and build for the next campaign. Tietz indicated the team would now focus on these remaining games, having achieved its primary objective. His contribution, both in key moments and as a symbol of the winter rebuild, underscores the importance of the club's mid-season business in securing their top-flight future.
