Pierre Lees-Melou details injury ordeal and fresh start after Paris FC move
Pierre Lees-Melou has completed a permanent transfer from Stade Brestois to Paris FC, marking a new chapter for the midfielder after a prolonged and complex injury struggle. The 32-year-old, who joined the capital club last summer, has now opened up in detail about the medical issues that plagued his final season at Brest and his initial months in Paris, revealing he played for over a year and a half with a substandard surgical plate in his leg.
Lees-Melou explained that he initially underwent surgery for a fibula fracture while at Brest, performed by a surgeon in Paris recommended by the club. According to the player, the plate implanted was too rigid for the flexible bone, causing repeated fissures above the hardware. The first re-fracture occurred in November 2024 during a match for Brest against Monaco. At that point, other specialists advised immediate corrective surgery, but with a Champions League tie against Real Madrid looming, Lees-Melou opted to delay the operation and play through the pain, a gamble he says paid off as he featured in those historic matches.
The issue resurfaced this past November after a minor impact in a Paris FC match against Lille. This time, the club's medical staff moved decisively. "We decided to operate and put in adapted material this time," Lees-Melou said. The new, more flexible titanium plate has resolved the problem, with the midfielder stating he now feels like a "new man" after returning to action without pain. He described the previous period as "complicated," with even some supporters and club staff questioning his commitment during a time when he was physically unable to strike a ball without severe pain.
The move to Paris FC itself came after interest from other Ligue 1 clubs like Rennes and Lyon. Lees-Melou cited the project at the second club of the capital, backed by new investors, as a key motivator for the switch following a full cycle at Brest where he experienced relegation battles, a third-place finish, and Champions League football. The recent managerial change at Paris FC, with the appointment of the experienced Antoine Kombouaré, has provided a fresh dynamic. Lees-Melou noted the new coach has brought rigor and combativeness, values the midfielder believes the squad needed.
Kombouaré's faith in the player has extended to naming him team captain, a role Lees-Melou accepted despite it not being a personal preference. He emphasized the importance of the human element in management, drawing parallels between Kombouaré and his former Brest coach Éric Roy, whom he held in high esteem. For Paris FC, securing a fully fit and motivated Lees-Melou is a significant boost as they look to solidify their Ligue 1 status under their new manager. For the player, the transfer represents a hard-won opportunity to finally play free from the physical burden that overshadowed his final year in Brittany.
