Pierre Sage has explained the reasoning behind his departure from RC Lens to take the managerial position at Crystal Palace. The 47-year-old coach revealed to L’Équipe that the opportunity to manage in the Premier League was a long-held ambition, stating the timing felt perfect to pursue that dream.
Sage’s rise through the coaching ranks has been rapid, having been an assistant coach at Red Star as recently as three years ago. He earned recognition throughout France last season, culminating in the UNFP award for Ligue 1’s best manager in May. His success with Lens, who he guided to a strong campaign, ultimately paved the way for the move to England.
Despite Lens’s qualification for European competition, Sage expressed his desire to test himself in the Premier League, believing it offers a comparable level of competition. He stated that while Lens would not be competing in the Champions League, he would be facing Champions League-level opposition “every weekend” in the English top flight. Sage also alluded to the limited window for opportunities in his professional life, suggesting he felt this chance “would not come around again.”
The move has naturally been met with disappointment from supporters of RC Lens, who had hoped to see Sage continue to lead the club. However, the allure of the Premier League proved too strong for the Lyon native. Crystal Palace currently sits mid-table and will hope Sage can provide a boost to their performance in the latter half of the season. His appointment signifies a clear ambition from Palace to move forward and establish themselves as a consistent Premier League force.
