Lens manager Pierre Sage has publicly discussed potential interest from Premier League clubs, casting doubt on his future with the Ligue 1 side. The 47-year-old, who led Lens to their first ever Coupe de France title and a second-place finish in Ligue 1, revealed he has been contacted by several English clubs, with Crystal Palace frequently mentioned as a potential destination.
Sage’s comments came during a series of media appearances following Lens’s Coupe de France victory over Nice on May 22nd. Initially, he suggested he would honor his contract with the club, but later conceded that “things are quite disruptive” and that discussions with English clubs were ongoing. He emphasized the unexpected nature of the attention, stating he hadn’t anticipated such a situation.
Appointed on June 2nd, 2024, Sage quickly revitalized Lens, exceeding expectations and guiding them to a remarkable season. He was recently named Ligue 1’s Manager of the Year by his peers. His success has inevitably attracted attention from clubs with greater financial resources, particularly as Lens face the challenge of retaining key players amid interest from other teams – including potential departures of Malang Sarr, Mamadou Sangaré, Robin Risser, and Ismaëlo Ganiou, alongside confirmed exits of Adrien Thomasson and Wesley Saïd.
Communication specialist Lionel Bellenger believes Sage has been unusually honest in his assessment of the situation, rather than employing typical “strategic fog.” Bellenger suggests Sage is being realistic and anticipates the difficulties Lens will face in maintaining their level of performance, especially with the added demands of Champions League football next season. Sage himself alluded to needing guarantees and a clear project to remain at Lens, expressing a desire to avoid a rebuild.
While Sage has expressed a desire to stay, he acknowledged the allure of new opportunities and the possibility of not being able to replicate this season’s success. He stated he would make a decision “quickly,” but the uncertainty surrounding his future remains. The situation could potentially force Lens to prepare for a managerial search during the off-season, impacting their transfer plans and overall strategy for the upcoming campaign.
