Eugen Polanski will continue as head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach for the 2026-27 Bundesliga season, the club announced on Tuesday evening. The decision follows a successful campaign in which Polanski guided Mönchengladbach to league safety after taking over mid-season.
Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder confirmed the extension in a media briefing, also indicating that changes are planned for both the playing squad and the coaching staff. According to Schröder, the club has already begun making adjustments with recent player transfers. He emphasized the challenging circumstances Polanski faced upon arrival, including a short preseason and his own appointment as sporting director.
Polanski, 40, took charge of Mönchengladbach in November 2023, inheriting a team struggling in the relegation zone. He previously managed 2. Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel, where he oversaw a promotion challenge before departing for the Bundesliga opportunity. Prior to his managerial career, Polanski enjoyed a playing career as a midfielder, representing clubs such as Getafe, 1860 Munich, and Polonia Warsaw, as well as earning 17 caps for the Poland national team.
Schröder highlighted Polanski’s ability to navigate high-pressure situations throughout the season and his success in achieving the primary goal of Bundesliga survival. The club now intends to provide Polanski with a full preseason to implement his tactical ideas and further develop the team. Mönchengladbach finished 13th in the Bundesliga this season, securing their place in the league for another year. This extension signals a vote of confidence in Polanski’s project and a commitment to building a more stable future for the club.
