Hamburger SV manager Merlin Polzin has been identified as a pivotal figure in the club’s successful return to the Bundesliga, according to the Bundesliga Update podcast. The podcast hosts, Tobi Schäfer and Jens Walbrodt, discussed the standout performers for each Bundesliga team, with Polzin emerging as a strong candidate for HSV’s ‘Employee of the Year.’
HSV secured their Bundesliga status early in the season and are currently positioned as the top team in the north, despite having one final match remaining against Bayer Leverkusen. While defender Luka Vuskovic is also considered a key player, Walbrodt highlighted Polzin’s impact in transforming the team’s style of play. He noted Polzin’s ability to shift the team from a possession-based offensive approach in the 2. Bundesliga to a defensively stable, counter-attacking system in the Bundesliga as particularly impressive.
According to the podcast, HSV has the second-highest number of counter-attack goals in the league, trailing only Bayern Munich. Schäfer agrees with Polzin’s impact but ultimately nominated sporting director Claus Costa as HSV’s most important figure. Costa’s late-window signings of Vuskovic, Viera, and Lokonga are credited with significantly strengthening the squad and ensuring their survival in the league, described as “absolute bullseyes.”
The podcast also discussed other standout performers across the Bundesliga, including VfB Stuttgart’s sporting director Fabian Wolgemuth, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and manager Vincent Kompany, and Borussia Dortmund’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and manager Niko Kovac. The Bundesliga Update podcast is available on ARD Sounds, all major podcast platforms, and the Sportschau-Fußball channel on YouTube, with new episodes released on Thursdays and Mondays.
