Ange Postecoglou has been appointed as the new manager of Saudi Pro League champions Al-Nassr, the club confirmed. The Australian coach joins Al-Nassr after a brief spell out of work following his departure from Nottingham Forest earlier this year. He has signed a two-year contract with the Saudi Arabian club.
Postecoglou will succeed Jorge Jesus, who led Al-Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title at the end of the previous season. He becomes the sixth manager to take charge of Cristiano Ronaldo since the Portuguese superstar’s move to the Gulf region. Al-Nassr finished second in the league in the 2022-23 season before Jesus’ arrival and subsequent title win.
Postecoglou’s time at Nottingham Forest was cut short after a challenging period where he struggled to implement his tactical vision. Prior to that, he gained recognition for his work in the A-League with Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory, winning multiple championships. He also managed the Australian national team, leading them to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and winning the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
The appointment represents a significant move for Postecoglou into a rapidly developing football league. The Saudi Pro League has attracted a number of high-profile players in recent times, boosted by significant investment. Al-Nassr, with Cristiano Ronaldo as their talisman, will be aiming to continue their dominance of Saudi Arabian football and potentially make an impact on the Asian Champions League. This move provides Postecoglou with a new challenge and the opportunity to work with a star-studded squad.
