Bayern Munich are progressing towards a contract extension for veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with sporting director Christoph Freund indicating a resolution is expected soon.
The 38-year-old’s current deal is set to expire this summer, making him a free agent, but both parties have expressed a desire to continue their long-standing relationship. Freund confirmed to Sky Sports that the club does not wish to prolong negotiations unnecessarily, stating, “We have always said that we don’t want to delay it indefinitely.”
However, Freund also emphasized that the final decision rests with Neuer himself, acknowledging the player’s pivotal role in the process: “Manu is the decisive factor.” He suggested a potential announcement could arrive before Bayern’s DFB-Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart on May 23, adding, “It’s heading in that direction, I assume so. The season is drawing to a close, that’s our goal.”
Kicker reports that Neuer is now close to agreeing the terms of a one-year extension, with an official announcement potentially arriving as early as next week. The extension would see the German international continue his illustrious career with the Bavarian giants.
Neuer has been a mainstay in the Bayern Munich goal since joining from Schalke 04 in 2011, winning numerous Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2013. While a serious leg injury kept him sidelined for a significant portion of the 2022-23 season, he returned to reclaim his starting position this term, though a late-season shoulder injury saw him replaced by Sven Ulreich. The club’s willingness to offer an extension demonstrates their continued faith in Neuer’s abilities and experience, despite the emergence of Alexander Nübel as a potential long-term successor.
The swift resolution of Neuer’s contract will allow Bayern to fully focus on other transfer priorities as they look to rebuild their squad following a disappointing Champions League quarter-final exit to Real Madrid. Securing Neuer’s future provides stability in a key position and allows the club to plan for the future with a proven leader between the posts.
