Paris Saint-Germain are set to sign Lucas Digne from Aston Villa, according to L’Équipe. The move comes despite Digne’s costly error in France’s recent World Cup qualifying defeat to Spain, where he conceded a penalty. PSG view the left-back as an ideal backup to Nuno Mendes.
Initially, Paris had prioritized a younger profile to provide cover for Mendes, who missed a cumulative 46 days through injury last season. However, Digne’s consistent performances in the Premier League, his experience at the highest level, and an estimated transfer fee of around €10 million have led to a change in thinking. His status as a player developed within the French system is also considered a benefit, particularly in relation to UEFA’s homegrown player quotas.
The arrival of Digne is likely to alter the defensive balance within the PSG squad. Lucas Hernandez, previously seen as Mendes’ backup, is now internally considered a central defensive option. While players such as Gonçalo Ramos, who has moved to AC Milan, and Kang-In Lee, expected to join Atlético Madrid, may seek more playing time, the Parisian leadership currently does not anticipate departures. Lucas Beraldo is expected to continue his development as a midfielder after impressing the coaching staff in the spring.
PSG currently have no plans to recruit a right-back, despite Achraf Hakimi’s 80-day absence last season. Luis Enrique believes he has sufficient options in that position through the versatility of Warren Zaïre-Emery, João Neves, and Senny Mayulu. Beyond the Digne deal, PSG are also progressing on other transfer targets. Maghnes Akliouche is expected in France early next week, with talks between PSG and AS Monaco reportedly nearing a conclusion. He has already agreed a five-year contract with Paris, similar to Yan Diomandé of Leipzig, another summer priority.
Discussions regarding a contract extension for Bradley Barcola, currently under contract until 2028, have been paused during the World Cup. PSG value Barcola at €150 million and are monitoring the market for potential offers. Following the sale of Gonçalo Ramos, the club continues to explore the possibility of signing Ferran Torres from Barcelona.
