Rabiot defends Leao as Milan forward faces uncertain future
AC Milan forward Rafa Leao faces a pivotal moment in his career after being subjected to significant whistles from the San Siro crowd following the team's 2-0 home defeat to Udinese on Friday. Teammate Adrien Rabiot publicly defended the Portuguese international, calling the reaction from supporters "a bit ugly" and insisting the squad must support him. The incident has intensified scrutiny over Leao's future at the club, with reports suggesting he could be sold this summer if a substantial offer arrives.
According to Italian media, a recent poll by La Gazzetta dello Sport indicated that 75.9% of responding fans would be in favour of selling the 26-year-old. Leao, who is Milan's top scorer this season with nine Serie A goals, has struggled for consistent form in 2026 and is perceived by many to be playing below his immense potential. His perceived indifferent attitude on the pitch has drawn particular criticism, despite his crucial role in the club's 2022 Scudetto triumph and run to the 2023 Champions League semi-finals.
Rabiot addressed the team's overall performance after the Udinese loss, telling reporters the squad looked physically and mentally tired. "Today we were disorganised, we conceded two goals and from there we were just running around the pitch," the French midfielder said. "We all made mistakes, and I first of all was not clear-headed in some situations. We create a lot of chances but we don't convert them." His decision to specifically shield Leao from criticism highlights the sensitive atmosphere surrounding the player.
Leao's development has reportedly plateaued in the last three years, with some observers noting a loss of explosiveness, possibly linked to past muscular issues. Coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has heavily relied on him, is now considering his options for the final stretch of the season. With attacking alternatives like Christian Pulisic, Christopher Nkunku, Santiago Gimenez, and Niclas Füllkrug available, Leao is no longer an automatic starter and could begin matches on the bench.
The coming months present a dual challenge for Leao. He is not a guaranteed starter for Portugal ahead of the World Cup, and his club future is increasingly uncertain. While not officially on the market, Milan's leadership is understood to consider him sellable for the right price, with potential interest from Premier League clubs or the Saudi Pro League. A major offer this summer could precipitate a departure, ending a six-year spell at the club that has promised more than it has recently delivered. For now, the focus is on regaining form and trust, with Rabiot's public backing a clear message to both the fans and the player himself.
