Gonçalo Ramos, Milan’s recent record signing, scored the decisive goal for Portugal against Croatia in their Euro 2024 round of sixteen match, assisted by Rafael Leao. Despite this connection on the pitch, the club anticipates Leao’s departure, with the player expressing his desire to leave and no longer fitting into the team’s plans, according to reports from Italy.
The goal against Croatia marked a significant moment for Ramos, who had limited playing time at the World Cup prior to this tournament. He entered the match in the 94th minute and headed in a cross from Leao, demonstrating his ability to make an impact as a substitute. Ramos stated he assured his teammates he would score if given the opportunity, and he delivered on that promise.
Ramos arrived at Milan from Benfica for a fee of 70 million euros, a substantial investment for a player who often featured as a substitute for both Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain. At PSG, despite scoring 45 goals in 131 appearances, he often played second fiddle to other attacking options. Manager Luis Enrique consistently highlighted Ramos’s potential, stating he always proved his worth when selected.
Milan has struggled to find a consistent and reliable centre-forward for the past two decades, with several signings failing to live up to expectations. The club hopes Ramos can break this trend, potentially ending a perceived “curse” on the number nine shirt. While primarily a striker, Ramos possesses versatility, capable of playing as a second striker or attacking midfielder, and contributes with both goals and assists.
Alongside Ramos’s arrival, Milan is preparing for Leao’s exit. His assist for Ramos is seen as a potential showcase for clubs interested in acquiring the Portuguese winger. Milan is hoping to receive between 60 and 70 million euros for Leao, with the player himself expressing a desire for a new challenge in a different league. Interest has come from clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, but Leao prefers a move to the English Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly inquired about his availability, though they are also considering other targets.
