Former Wales international Aaron Ramsey is set to begin his managerial career at Oxford United, according to reports from The Athletic. The appointment comes after Ramsey announced his retirement as a player in April, bringing an end to a career that included a spell with Pumas UNAM in Mexico.
Oxford United recently finished 22nd in the Championship, resulting in relegation to League One, and the club is hoping Ramsey can lead them to an immediate return to the second tier. Ramsey expressed his desire to move into coaching in a May interview with the BBC, stating he felt prepared to “train, lead, and inspire a group of players.”
Ramsey’s playing career saw him feature prominently for Arsenal, making 369 appearances between 2008 and 2019. He also earned 86 caps for Wales, becoming a key figure in the national team’s midfield. While at Arsenal, Ramsey was known for his late runs into the box and ability to score crucial goals, winning three FA Cups with the club.
The 46-year-old is expected to be joined in the Oxford United staff by fellow Welsh international Chris Gunter, who has 109 caps for his country. The official announcement of Ramsey’s arrival is anticipated on Tuesday. Interestingly, Ramsey will also come up against another former Arsenal player, Jack Wilshere, who is currently the manager of Luton Town, during his time in League One. This appointment marks a new chapter for Ramsey as he transitions from a celebrated player to a manager seeking to rebuild a club.
