Giacomo Raspadori has credited a conversation with Atalanta defender Matteo Ruggeri as a key factor in his decision to join the club from Atletico Madrid. The forward explained in an interview with Radio Serie A that Ruggeri’s positive assessment of the club and city was instrumental in his choice.
Raspadori sought Ruggeri’s opinion when the opportunity to move to Bergamo arose, valuing the insight of a player who came through Atalanta’s youth system. He revealed, “When the opportunity came to come here, I spoke with him, he spoke very well of it giving me his ‘okay’.” Ruggeri’s description of the ideal environment for a player ultimately swayed Raspadori.
“He grew up here, he felt very good, he told me I would be great and so I made this decision which I am super happy about and determined to do my best,” Raspadori added. The Italy international appears to have quickly embraced his new surroundings, expressing his admiration for the club’s passionate fanbase.
Raspadori described Bergamo as a “great city” and highlighted the incredible support he observed even when playing as an opponent. He stated he is now experiencing that support firsthand and is grateful for the opportunity. He also expressed his gratitude to the fans for their warm welcome, noting their consistent displays of affection. Raspadori joined Atalanta in January 2026 seeking more consistent playing time after a limited role with Atletico Madrid.
The move allows Atalanta to bolster their attacking options for the remainder of the Serie A season, and potentially for a Champions League push. Raspadori’s arrival adds another dimension to Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad, providing further competition and tactical flexibility.
