RB Leipzig are once again pursuing Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri, according to a report in Sport Bild. The Bundesliga club were previously linked with the 29-year-old last summer, but a transfer failed to materialise. This renewed interest comes as Leipzig seek to bolster their midfield options under new head coach Martin Demichelis.
Amiri has been identified as a key target to add experience to Leipzig’s midfield, particularly with Christoph Baumgartner facing a significant period on the sidelines due to injury. While not viewed as a direct replacement for Baumgartner, Demichelis reportedly intends to utilise two number eight midfielders, and Amiri is seen as a player who can immediately contribute to the squad. The potential for both players to feature together upon Baumgartner’s return has also been noted.
Mainz, however, are in a strong negotiating position, with Amiri currently under contract until 2028. The club are therefore under no immediate pressure to sell one of their key players. Any move to Leipzig is likely to be contingent on player sales from the Red Bulls, with the club prioritizing financial stability before making significant investments.
Amiri’s own stance on his future at Mainz appears open to possibilities. Following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, the player did not dismiss the prospect of a summer departure when questioned about his long-term plans. He joined Mainz in 2022 from Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent four seasons, making over 150 appearances across all competitions. He has established himself as a consistent performer in the Bundesliga, known for his technical ability and work rate.
Leipzig finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, securing a Champions League spot. Strengthening the midfield will be crucial as they aim to challenge Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the title. The addition of an experienced player like Amiri could provide a valuable asset to Demichelis’ squad.
