RB Leipzig set to sign Gladbach's Nathan Ngoumou in summer transfer
RB Leipzig have agreed a deal to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Nathan Ngoumou at the end of the season, according to sources close to both clubs. The transfer, reported by Sky Germany, is understood to be worth an initial fee in the region of €15 million, with potential add-ons that could see the total rise. The 24-year-old French winger is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Champions League contenders, keeping him at the Red Bull Arena until 2029.
Ngoumou, who joined Gladbach from Toulouse in the summer of 2022, has developed into a key attacking outlet for the Foals. Primarily operating on the right wing, his direct running and pace have been standout features in a challenging season for the club. He has contributed three goals and five assists in 24 Bundesliga appearances this campaign, despite Gladbach's struggles in the lower half of the table.
The move represents a clear piece of succession planning for Leipzig, who are anticipating significant interest in their own star wingers this summer. Both Xavi Simons, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, and the in-form Benjamin Sesko have been linked with moves away. Sporting director Rouven Schröder is known for identifying and securing targets early, and Ngoumou fits the profile of a dynamic, young player with resale potential that the club favours.
For Gladbach, the sale provides crucial funds as they look to rebuild under sporting director Nils Schmadtke. With the club not in immediate financial peril, the fee allows for reinvestment in a squad that requires strengthening in several areas. Ngoumou's departure, while a loss, was considered increasingly likely given his progression and the fact his contract still had two years remaining.
The transfer will see Ngoumou take a significant step up in competitive level, moving from a mid-table side to a club that has consistently qualified for the Champions League. His adaptation to the intense, high-pressing system favoured by Leipzig coach Marco Rose will be key. Rose, who previously managed Gladbach, is familiar with the player's attributes and is believed to have been a driving force behind the move.
Ngoumou is not expected to feature when the two teams meet this weekend at the Red Bull Arena, as he is still recovering from a muscle injury. His final appearance for Gladbach could now come in their remaining fixtures of the season, as they aim to secure their Bundesliga status. For Leipzig, the deal is an early signal of intent in the summer market as they prepare for another season mixing domestic challenges with European football.
