RB Leipzig edge past Werder Bremen to bolster Champions League push
RB Leipzig strengthened their grip on a top-four Bundesliga position with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion on Saturday. Goals from Antonio Nusa and Rômulo in either half secured the three points, with Salim Musah's stoppage-time strike for Bremen proving only a consolation.
Despite Bremen's energetic start and early dominance of possession, it was Leipzig who struck first against the run of play after 15 minutes. A swift counter-attack, initiated after Maarten Vandevoordt saved from Romano Schmid, ended with Rômulo's blocked effort falling to Antonio Nusa. The Norwegian winger cut inside and fired a low shot past Mio Backhaus for his fifth league goal of the campaign.
Werder Bremen, under Daniel Thioune, continued to create the better chances for the remainder of the first half. Cameron Puertas and Romano Schmid were both denied by smart saves or narrow misses, but the home side failed to convert their pressure into an equalizer before the interval.
Leipzig effectively killed the game shortly after the restart. A Bremen turnover high up the pitch was punished as Christoph Baumgartner drove into the box. After a challenge, the ball broke to Rômulo, who calmly finished first-time to double the lead and score his third goal since joining from Wolfsburg last summer.
The second goal visibly deflated Bremen, who struggled to replicate their first-half intensity. Leipzig controlled proceedings for long periods, with Yan Diomande coming close to a third with a late chipped effort. Substitute Salim Musah did manage to pull one back for the hosts in added time, slotting home coolly for his first club goal, but there was insufficient time to mount a full comeback.
The result sees Leipzig consolidate fourth place, opening a four-point gap over fifth-placed Borussia Dortmund, who have a game in hand. According to Bundesliga statistics, Leipzig have now won four of their last five league matches, demonstrating a resilience that will be crucial in the race for Champions League qualification.
For Werder Bremen, the defeat leaves them in 14th place, just five points above the relegation playoff spot. The performance offered encouragement but a continued lack of cutting edge in front of goal remains a concern, with the team having failed to win in their last five Bundesliga outings. The club will hope the late goal from Musah, a January loan signing from Valencia, can spark a more prolific run-in as they seek to secure their top-flight status.
