RB Leipzig have completed the signing of Maxime Estève from Burnley for a reported fee of €25 million. The 24-year-old center-back has signed a contract with the Bundesliga club until 2031 and will wear the number 3 shirt, previously held by Lutsharel Geertruida.
Estève arrives at Leipzig after a single season with Burnley, where he quickly established himself as a key player despite the club’s subsequent relegation from the Premier League. He was a standout performer in Burnley’s Championship-winning campaign in 2024/25, earning a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year as the team recorded 30 clean sheets. He then featured in 34 Premier League games for the Clarets last term.
Prior to his move to England in February 2024, Estève developed through the youth ranks at Montpellier, becoming a regular in their first team. The left-footed defender represented France at both Under-21 and Under-23 levels, the latter under the guidance of former international star Thierry Henry. His international experience and consistent performances attracted the attention of several clubs, ultimately leading to his transfer to Leipzig.
RB Leipzig’s managing director Marcel Schäfer expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating that Estève is a “hugely important” addition to the squad. Schäfer highlighted the defender’s experience in both France and England, as well as his impressive development at Burnley. Estève himself echoed these sentiments, stating he was drawn to Leipzig’s “high-intensity, fearless football” and the club’s ambition to compete in the Champions League, Bundesliga, and DFB-Pokal.
This move provides Leipzig with a promising young defender to bolster their backline, while Estève gains the opportunity to compete at a high level in the Champions League. The transfer also allows Burnley to recoup a significant fee following their relegation, aiding their rebuilding efforts in the Championship.
