Real Madrid have made a €150 million bid for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, a move that has been widely criticised as a public relations misstep following comments made by president Florentino Perez during his re-election campaign. The offer, officially announced by the club on Tuesday, is unlikely to be accepted by Atlético, but Perez had publicly stated he would make a record bid for a “top, top name” player.
Perez’s pledge came in response to a rival candidate’s claim that Erling Haaland would sign for Real Madrid had they been elected, a claim quickly disputed by both Manchester City and Haaland’s agent. Perez aimed to demonstrate his own ability to attract star players, referencing past signings like Luis Figo, David Beckham, Ronaldo, and Kaka. However, the subsequent bid for Álvarez, a player deemed unrealistic to acquire, has backfired.
Atlético Madrid swiftly responded to the offer with a series of mocking posts on social media, including a tweet featuring laughing emojis, and accused Real Madrid of attempting to poach their academy players. While the bid may effectively price Barcelona out of a move for Álvarez, it has significantly weakened Real Madrid’s negotiating position in other potential transfers.
The move is seen as a significant error in judgement by Perez, essentially revealing Real Madrid’s transfer budget to other clubs. Chelsea, for example, are now likely to demand a higher fee for Enzo Fernandez, who has been linked with a move to the Bernabéu, knowing that Real Madrid have substantial funds available. Similarly, Arsenal, West Ham, and Manchester City will be in stronger positions to negotiate favourable deals for Riccardo Calafiori, Mateus Fernandes, and Rodri, respectively. The situation also complicates contract negotiations with existing players, such as Vinicius Junior, who is seeking a wage increase.
This ill-conceived bid, made to fulfil a campaign promise, is expected to create significant challenges for incoming manager Jose Mourinho and could severely hamper Real Madrid’s transfer plans this summer.
