Real Madrid have seen a €150 million bid for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez rejected, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The offer was made following a board meeting and was intended to secure a player who “projects from midfield to attack”, according to comments made by president Florentino Pérez after his recent re-election.
Álvarez has become a key figure for Atlético since joining from River Plate in January 2023, scoring 16 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions last season. He quickly established himself as a starter under Diego Simeone, contributing significantly to their Champions League run and La Liga campaign. His versatility, capable of playing as a centre-forward or in a wider role, made him an attractive target for Real Madrid.
However, Atlético Madrid swiftly rejected the offer, citing Julián Álvarez’s release clause as the reason. A club statement read that they “thanked Real Madrid for the offer, made within the framework of the good relations existing between the two clubs, and rejected it invoking the termination clause of the player’s contract.” The exact value of that release clause has not been publicly disclosed, but it is understood to be significantly higher than the €150 million offered.
This rejection marks a rare instance of direct negotiation between the Madrid clubs failing to yield a result. While player exchanges and deals have occurred in the past, Atlético have often been reluctant to strengthen their rivals. This move from Pérez was seen as a bold attempt to address a perceived need for attacking impetus in the Real Madrid squad, particularly with the future of some existing forwards uncertain. The failed bid leaves Real Madrid to reassess their attacking options as the transfer window progresses, with Michael Olise and João Neves previously linked as potential alternatives.
