Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has identified both Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie of Arsenal as potential defensive reinforcements this summer, according to a report by TEAMtalk. Mourinho is seeking a versatile defender capable of playing both centre-back and left-back, a profile that both players fit.
Calafiori has impressed since joining Arsenal, demonstrating his adaptability and defensive qualities. However, Arsenal are reportedly reluctant to sell the Italy international, and would demand a “huge fee” for his departure. Sources indicate the club values Calafiori highly and does not actively want to facilitate a transfer.
Hincapie, currently on loan at Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen, is expected to have his loan made permanent this summer for a fee of around €52 million, with Leverkusen also retaining a 10% sell-on clause. Fabrizio Romano reported that the deal is already agreed, with a five-year contract in place for the Ecuador international. Arsenal moved quickly to secure Hincapie to ward off interest from Tottenham.
While Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol is reportedly Madrid’s primary target for a centre-back, the club are exploring alternatives should that deal fall through. Both Hincapie and Calafiori are said to be keen on a move to the Bernabeu, with Hincapie having long harboured a dream of playing for Real Madrid and Calafiori eager to reunite with Mourinho, whom he knows well. The potential for both players to compete for playing time at Arsenal is also cited as a factor in their openness to a transfer.
Despite the interest from Madrid, it appears unlikely Arsenal would sanction the departure of both defenders in the same window, particularly given the impending permanent signing of Hincapie. The situation with Gvardiol will likely dictate Madrid’s next move, but Calafiori remains a viable option should their pursuit of the City defender prove unsuccessful.
