Barcelona have received a financial boost from Real Madrid as they attempt to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez. The unexpected payment of €1.35 million stems from Los Blancos’ recent €60 million acquisition of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, with Barcelona due compensation due to Cucurella’s time in La Masia’s youth system.
Álvarez is Barcelona’s primary target to replace Robert Lewandowski, who departed earlier this summer, but Atlético Madrid are proving difficult to negotiate with, maintaining a firm stance that the player is not for sale and referencing his €500 million release clause. Álvarez himself has publicly expressed his desire to join Barcelona, stating a move would be beneficial for all parties and fulfil a long-held ambition.
Despite the player’s wishes, the relationship between Álvarez and Atlético manager Diego Simeone is reportedly strained, raising questions about his future at the club. However, Atlético remain resolute in their position and are currently unwilling to negotiate with their rivals. Barcelona are actively seeking to generate Financial Fair Play leeway and raise funds for a potential bid, which is expected to exceed €150 million.
Barcelona are focusing on player sales to achieve this, having already sold goalkeeper Iñaki Peña to Panathinaikos. Ansu Fati’s loan to Monaco is expected to become permanent, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen is also set to be offloaded. Young defender Marc Casado is available for a fee between €20 million and €30 million, attracting interest from Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, and clubs in Saudi Arabia. The small windfall from the Cucurella deal, while not substantial, provides a welcome addition to Barcelona’s transfer budget as they continue their pursuit of Álvarez.
The Cucurella transfer itself was a surprise, as the Spain international had been linked with a return to Barcelona or a move to Atlético Madrid. Real Madrid’s swift agreement with Chelsea allowed them to secure the player, while simultaneously providing a financial benefit to Barcelona through the training compensation.
