Real Madrid have confirmed the sale of left-back Fran Garcia to Real Betis for a fee of €4 million, with the Spanish club retaining a 50% sell-on clause, according to Fabrizio Romano. The move comes after the arrival of Marc Cucurella at the Bernabeu, prompting speculation about the future of several left-backs within the squad.
Despite reported interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea in Alvaro Carreras, the 23-year-old will remain at Real Madrid as back-up to Cucurella. Carreras joined Los Blancos from Benfica last year for around €50 million, and while his first season was considered solid, the signing of Cucurella, who previously played for Chelsea, has altered the dynamic of the left-back position.
Manchester United were linked with a potential re-signing of Carreras, having previously had him in their academy between 2020 and 2024. Chelsea were also mentioned as potential suitors, with manager Xabi Alonso, who briefly managed Carreras at Real Madrid, reportedly keen on a reunion. However, with Carreras set to remain as understudy to Cucurella, Chelsea are now focusing on Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria as an alternative.
Garcia’s departure frees up space in the Real Madrid squad, and the player has already agreed personal terms with Real Betis. He will undergo a medical before completing his return to the Seville-based club. Meanwhile, Manchester United may now prioritize strengthening other areas of their squad, particularly in central midfield and potentially on the left wing, rather than pursuing another left-back. This decision allows Real Madrid to solidify their options at left-back with Cucurella and Carreras, while providing Garcia with regular playing time at Betis.
