Real Madrid Sign Midfielder from Rivals in €50m Deal
Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from La Liga rivals Real Sociedad for an initial €50m fee, with the deal confirmed by both clubs on Thursday. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract through 2029, featuring a €1bn release clause in line with Madrid's policy for key signings.
Zubimendi arrives at the Bernabéu after establishing himself as one of Spain's most consistent defensive midfielders during four full seasons as a Sociedad first-team regular. His technical security and positional discipline attracted Madrid's attention as they sought long-term reinforcement in the pivot role, with Toni Kroos retiring and Eduardo Camavinga frequently deployed at left-back last season.
The Basque midfielder leaves his boyhood club after 14 years in their youth system, having made 180 senior appearances since his 2019 debut. His final campaign yielded 42 matches across all competitions, helping Sociedad secure European qualification for the second consecutive year.
For Madrid, the transfer continues their strategy of recruiting proven La Liga talent following last summer's acquisition of Jude Bellingham. Zubimendi's familiarity with Spanish football and Champions League experience – including a standout performance against Paris Saint-Germain in this year's competition – made him a priority target for manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Sociedad will reinvest part of the fee to strengthen their squad while maintaining their model of promoting youth products. The transfer represents their second-highest sale after Antoine Griezmann's €120m move to Barcelona in 2019.
