Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, according to Fabrizio Romano, following recent changes in the Liverpool managerial position. The potential move comes after Arne Slot’s dismissal as Liverpool manager, though it is not expected to significantly alter the Reds’ transfer plans.
Dumfries’ representatives have reportedly been actively seeking a move for the Netherlands international, making Liverpool aware of his desire to leave Inter Milan during the summer transfer window. Slot had previously identified Dumfries as a potential reinforcement at right-back for Liverpool, but with his departure, the situation has shifted. Andoni Iraola is expected to take over as Liverpool manager.
Madrid are now pursuing Dumfries as a solution to a developing issue in their own squad, with Dani Carvajal expected to depart the Estadio Bernabeu this summer. Currently, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only recognised senior right-back at the club. Incoming manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly requested the signing of a new player in that position.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Real Madrid have contacted Dumfries’ camp regarding a potential transfer in the summer of 2026, with Inter Milan having set a release clause of slightly less than €25 million. The Spanish club’s approach is contingent on triggering this release clause, with no formal bid or negotiations currently underway.
Dumfries has been with Inter Milan since 2021, winning two Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies. He also played a key role in Inter’s runs to the Champions League final in both 2023 and 2025. The 30-year-old is currently under contract with the Italian club until 2028.
Madrid have also considered other options at right-back, including Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro, but manager Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly unwilling to sell the Spaniard. Sporting CP’s Ivan Fresneda is another player on Madrid’s radar. However, De Zerbi’s desire to retain Porro appears to have complicated that potential deal.
