Red Star march on with victory over Guingamp in Ligue 2
Red Star FC continued their push for promotion from Ligue 2 with a dramatic 3-2 home victory over En Avant Guingamp at the Stade Bauer on Saturday. The win sees the Audonian club consolidate their position in fourth place in the table, firmly in the playoff conversation with the season entering its final stages.
The hosts had to come from behind after falling behind to an early strike from Guingamp's Louis Mafouta in the sixth minute. The momentum shifted dramatically in a one-minute spell just after the half-hour mark. First, Damien Durand equalized in the 34th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from the Breton side. Immediately afterwards, Jovany Ikanga put Red Star ahead with a spectacular solo effort, curling a finish into the top corner.
Ryad Hachem extended the lead just before halftime, making it 3-1 in the 43rd minute to give Red Star a commanding cushion. The second half proved nervy for the home side, however, as Mafouta converted a penalty in the 71st minute to set up a tense finale. Red Star managed to hold on through seven minutes of stoppage time to secure a crucial three points.
This result marks a swift recovery for Red Star after a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Reims in their previous outing. The team's ability to score goals in quick succession has been a hallmark of their campaign. The victory keeps pressure on the automatic promotion spots, though the primary objective remains securing a place in the end-of-season playoffs.
Elsewhere in Ligue 2, the battle to avoid relegation saw significant developments. Laval took a major step towards safety with a 0-0 draw against Rodez, moving four points clear of the relegation zone. Bastia, deep in trouble, earned a vital point with a last-gasp 1-1 draw away at Clermont, thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer from Alexandre Zaouai.
At the other end of the table, Montpellier strengthened their position near the summit with a 0-2 victory over Amiens, a result that leaves Amiens in grave danger. The match between Annecy and Pau was interrupted for over thirty minutes due to pyrotechnics being thrown onto the pitch, but Annecy eventually ran out 5-1 winners in a spectacular display. The league title and relegation battles remain intensely competitive as the season approaches its climax.
